The History Detective Series: Part 3 – How Do You Predict Which Stopping Zones Became True Overnight Camps?
By the end of Part Two, the route should no longer look like a single unbroken line across the map. It should look divided into practical day-ending windows shaped by distance, animals, weather, terrain, water, and the purpose of the journey. That is a major step forward in this series because it changes how we focus on traveling parameters, but it still leaves us with an important problem. Not every place where people paused became an overnight camp.
Some stops were brief. A team was watered and moved on or perhaps a strap was repaired. A rider rested a horse, ate something quickly, and continued before dark. A group halted only long enough to judge the road ahead. If we want to think like real investigators, we have to do more than identify where a day might have ended. We have to ask which of those likely stopping zones had the practical qualities that turned a pause into a camp. That distinction matters because camps leave a different kind of footprint.
A place where people stopped for ten minutes may give up very little. A place where they cooked, watered stock, loosened harness, built fires, spread blankets, tended injuries, guarded animals, talked, traded, mended equipment, and slept through the night had far more opportunity to hold evidence. The longer people remained (or the more people stopped at one particular spot), the more ordinary life took over from movement. That is when objects were handled, forgotten, mended, dropped, traded, discarded, or simply lost in the process of living.
The first question is not whether a place sat within the right travel window. Part Two already gave us that filter. The next question is whether the place solved the problems an overnight stop had to solve.
Water Always Came First
That should surprise no one, but it is still remarkable how often people of today take it for granted and treat water as though any wet spot on the map would do. It would not. As we discussed earlier, a seep that could water one rider or draft animal might be useless for a wagon train. A muddy crossing might provide water and still make a miserable camp. A stream might run in spring and fail in late summer and that was and still is a common thing. A pool of water could exist but be fouled by chemicals or dead animals. As a History Detective, we are not merely asking whether water was present. We ask whether water was dependable, reachable, sufficient, and usable under the conditions likely to have existed at the time.
It is also worth remembering that experienced travelers were rarely moving blind. Wagon masters, military commands, freighters, and cattlemen often knew where expected water lay before they ever reached it. They learned from trail guides, earlier emigrant accounts, military reports, local knowledge, established river corridors, known springs, fords, stations, and the experience of men who had traveled the road before. Historical route knowledge was never perfect, but it was usually practical and common knowledge among those whose lives depended on a successful migration. That is one reason trail guides paid such close attention to wood, water, grass, and fords. Those things governed survival as much as route direction did.
Alkali water could be a problem and that is something to keep in mind. Most travelers such as wagon trains, cattle drives, military patrols wanted to avoid it. But if necessary to depend on it, some would add vinegar to lessen the alkali itself. The most common historical solution was not treating alkaline water at all—it was avoiding it. Wagon masters, military scouts, Texas Rangers, freighters, and experienced cattle drovers invested enormous effort in learning where dependable fresh springs, seeps, and flowing streams were located. Entire routes were often planned around reliable water rather than the shortest distance.

How to Read Clayton’s Emigrants’ Guide Like a Wagon Master
- William Clayton’s 1848 Latter-Day Saints’ Emigrants’ Guide was not written like a modern travel book. It was closer to a field manual. Its purpose was to help an emigrant, wagon captain, or wagon master know what lay ahead before the train committed itself to the next day’s travel. Clayton explained that the distances had been measured by roadometer, and that the guide allowed the traveler to know “each day” the kind of country ahead and how far he had to go to reach a suitable night camp. That is the key to understanding the book. It was not simply telling people where the trail went. It was helping them decide when to stop, when to push on, and when not to trust a place that looked usable but was dangerous or unreliable.
- The first thing to understand is the structure of the guide. Clayton explained that the main entries identified the prominent points a traveler would naturally notice, while the distance columns gave both point-to-point mileage and total distance from Winter Quarters and from the Great Salt Lake. The smaller remarks gave the practical information: the nature of the road, the land, and whether the place was suitable for camping. In other words, the large entry told the traveler where he was. The numbers told him how far he had come and how far he had to go. The remarks told him whether he should stop there.
- A good example from the page above appears at the La Bonte River. Clayton identifies the river as thirty feet wide and two feet deep, then describes it as a good camp because it had timber, grass, and water. That one short entry tells a wagon master nearly everything he needed to know. Water was available for people and animals. Grass was available for oxen, horses, mules, and loose stock. Timber meant fuel for cooking and possibly small repairs. Clayton also notes that there was another good camping chance a mile farther on. That gave the train captain a choice. If the animals were tired, the train could stop at La Bonte. If the day was still young or the camp was crowded, the train could move another mile and still expect a usable camp.
- The very next entries show why this guide mattered. Clayton describes a branch of La Bonte as doubtful for water and having steep banks. A short distance later, he notes a very small creek with little chance for grass and even less for water, followed by another place he calls a very poor chance for camping. To a modern reader, these may look like small details. To a wagon master, they were warnings. A creek on a map was not automatically a camp. A stream might be too steep to cross easily, too unreliable for water, or too poor in grass to feed a team. Clayton was teaching emigrants to judge the landscape by usefulness, not by appearance.
- The A La Prele River entry shows another important lesson. Clayton calls it a good place to camp, but immediately warns that the land between the creeks was sandy and barren and that the road beyond was uneven, with hills and hollows. That is exactly the kind of information a wagon master needed before deciding whether to stop early or continue. A strong team might push forward. A tired team might not. The question was not simply, “Can we make more miles?” The better question was, “What condition will the animals be in if the next miles are sandy, barren, uneven, or short of water?” Clayton’s guide allowed the train to think ahead instead of merely reacting after trouble began.
- Deer Creek provides an even richer example. Clayton describes it as a lovely place to camp, with clear water, fish, timber, and even a coal mine nearby, but he also warns that after leaving it, the road becomes sandy for nine miles and grass becomes scarce. This is the logic of the overland trail. A good camp was not only a place to rest. It was also a staging point before a harder stretch. A careful wagon master would use a place like Deer Creek to water the animals, let them graze, repair small problems, and prepare for the next section. The guide was not just recording campsites. It was identifying the rhythm of survival: good camp, hard road, doubtful water, scarce grass, next safe stop.
- Clayton’s comments also help the modern History Detective reconstruct where people were likely to stop. When a guide says a place had water, grass, timber, and a good crossing, that location becomes a high-probability camp zone. When it says no grass, doubtful water, steep banks, bad crossing, or no place to camp, that location becomes less likely to have held a full overnight wagon camp. This does not mean no one ever stopped there. Accidents, sickness, broken wagons, storms, and exhausted animals could force a halt almost anywhere. But when looking for the most likely places where people cooked, repaired equipment, watered animals, discarded broken items, or lost small objects, the best starting points are the places Clayton marked as dependable camps.
- This is why Clayton’s guide is so valuable. It turns the trail from a vague line across the West into a chain of decisions. Every entry can be read as a question a wagon master had to answer: Is there water? Is there grass? Is there fuel? Can the wagons cross? Is the road sandy, rocky, steep, or heavy? Is the next good place close enough to reach before dark? Read that way, Clayton’s guide is more than an emigrant handbook. It is a window into how wagon trains actually moved, stopped, survived, and left evidence behind.
This information alone, as presented to you above, could be worth its weight in gold, or silver, or relics, or enjoyment. You have just seen how the context of what was a fairly common type of guidebook can help you determine the sites to seek out there. For point of reference, William Clayton’s 1848 guide was printed in an edition of 5,000 copies and was used extensively by Latter-day Saint companies, California gold seekers, and other western emigrants. Although no exact readership count survives, its route descriptions and mileage tables likely guided some 50,000 or so travelers, either directly or through later publications that reproduced Clayton’s information. Grass and Forage Mattered Almost as Much as Water
A camp involving animals was never just a human problem. Horses, mules, and oxen had to be watered, but they also had to feed. A place with water and no workable grazing might serve for a short halt and still fail as an overnight camp. Travelers who expected to move again the next morning needed animals capable of moving. That meant grass, browse, or forage within reasonable reach. This is one of the reasons certain stopping places were used again and again while others were passed over. Water alone is not always enough. Water and feed together are far more persuasive. This fact affected the time of year that people could move. If you were crossing mountains, you did not want to start off in the late Fall season.
Wagon trains did not carry enough feed to sustain their animals across the plains. The animals lived largely off the country, grazing on prairie grass, meadow grass, and available browse wherever the train stopped. This made grass almost as important as water. A good campsite was not merely a place where people could sleep; it had to provide water, fuel, and enough grazing to keep the oxen, mules, horses, and loose cattle alive for the next day’s travel. Both water and forage determined when wagon trains could leave in order to make a long arduous journey and avoid snow, drought, and know famine.
Several wagon trains, or parts of wagon trains, are recorded as wintering short of their destination before continuing. It was not the usual plan; it was usually the result of late departure, heavy wagons, exhausted animals, bad route choices, snow, or being caught near a mountain crossing too late in the season. The most famous case was the Donner-Reed Party, but other less tragic examples occurred at Winter Quarters, Salt Lake City, the Columbia River country, and the Mount Hood/Barlow Road area. Those might be worthy of a History Detective’s attention and research to find some of those locations.
Timber and fuel often played a larger role than modern people appreciate. Fire meant warmth, cooking, light, and sometimes protection. Not every camp required heavy timber, but a completely exposed place with no nearby fuel had obvious disadvantages, especially in colder seasons or on routes where people expected to remain until morning. At the same time, wood was not the only answer. On the open plains, where trees could be scarce for long stretches, overland travelers commonly gathered dry buffalo chips for fuel. They burned hot, formed useful coals, and became an ordinary substitute when wood was limited. That matters to a History Detective because a camp did not always need a grove of timber close at hand to function. A good camp needed workable fuel, and on some routes that fuel came from the ground as much as from the trees. A good camp did not need to be luxurious. It needed to be workable.
Level ground matters for reasons so simple that people sometimes forget to account for them. Men sleep better on level ground. Wagons settle better on level ground. Animals are easier to manage on level ground. A place can be rich in water and grass and still make a poor camp if it is broken, rocky, marshy, steep, or vulnerable to flooding. Slight rises, benches above creeks, open flats near water but not in water, and protected ground with reasonable drainage appear again and again in historical movement because they solved problems that mattered at the end of a hard day.
Drainage is one of those quiet realities that separates a plausible map point from a place real people would have chosen. Earlier travelers did not need engineering terms to understand wet ground. They knew by experience what happened when rain came in the night, when wheels bogged down, when stock churned the earth into mud, when bedding soaked through, and when an inviting low spot turned miserable by midnight. A camp that could stay relatively dry without being too far from water almost always held an advantage over one that offered convenience without comfort.
Shade may seem like a lesser consideration until you remember how much nineteenth-century travel depended upon managing heat. In summer country, shade could make the difference between a tolerable stop and an exhausting one. An important consideration might not be apparent to many newer detectorists…..How heat affects the animals used to pull wagons:
Oxen (Which are considered as cattle but were used for long-distance travel)
Oxen sweat, but not nearly as efficiently as horses or mules. They have sweat glands over much of their body, but sweating is only a secondary cooling mechanism. They rely much more on panting, increased breathing, standing in shade, reducing activity, dissipating heat through blood flow to the skin. Because of this, oxen overheat more easily during sustained hard work, especially in hot, humid conditions. Experienced wagon masters understood this and commonly traveled during the cooler parts of the day, rested at midday in extreme heat, watered oxen whenever good water was available, and avoided pushing them up long grades without frequent stops.
Ironically, despite being slower, oxen were often the preferred draft animal on the trail because they could survive on poorer forage, were less likely to panic, and generally required less intensive care than horses.
Mules
Mules sweat very efficiently, much like horses. They possess abundant sweat glands, cool themselves primarily through evaporation, tolerate heat exceptionally well, and lose significant amounts of water while working. This is one reason mules became favorites of the U.S. Army, freighters, Texas Rangers, Confederate and Union supply trains, and western pack trains. A mule could work in conditions that would severely stress a horse, although it still required frequent watering and rest.
Horses
Horses also sweat profusely and cool themselves efficiently. However, they generally require better forage, more water, and more careful management than oxen.
A History Detective Observation
This difference has an interesting implication for historical research. A wagon train pulled by oxen often had a slower pace and was more dependent on reliable water and shade. Because oxen could not dissipate heat as effectively, emigrants frequently selected camps near springs, creeks, and timber, particularly during the summer.
A mule-drawn freight outfit or military column could travel farther between stops and tolerate hotter conditions, but it still required dependable water sources. This influenced where freighters, soldiers, and stage lines established camps.
Understanding the draft animals used on a route can therefore help explain why certain stopping places became heavily used while others were only occasional camps. It’s another example of how animal behavior, human needs, and landscape features combined to determine where artifacts accumulated.
Trees also provided more than shade. They could offer shelter from wind, a place to tie animals, fuel for a fire, material for repairs, and a visual marker on otherwise open ground. A stand of timber near water and level ground was not merely attractive. It was practical.
Then There Is Security Which We Should Talk About as Well
Security did not mean the same thing for every traveler. A family on a migration route, a stage line, a military patrol, a freighting outfit, and a scouting party all judged danger differently. But no one chose a camp carelessly if a better option lay nearby. Visibility mattered as did defensible ground. Distance from ambush points mattered to protect from hostile forces or bandits. Other factors such as access to the road, ease of departure in the morning, and whether stock could be controlled without too much trouble. A camp tucked so tightly into brush that it invited surprise might lose out to a more open bench with slightly poorer shade but better security. Historical camps were chosen by human beings balancing several needs at once, not by one rule alone.
This is where scouts, guides, and advance riders become important. Military commands did not wait to discover water and camp ground by accident at dusk. Guides familiar with country unknown to the soldiers could lead troops through it, and scouts or trailers could move ahead, read the ground, and report what lay before the column. On cattle drives, the trail boss was expected to have the evening camp in mind before the herd reached it, with grass and water weighing heavily in that choice. Civilian emigrants also benefited from local guides, experienced wagon masters, and the accumulated knowledge of earlier travelers. The farther a group moved from settled country, the more valuable that forward-looking knowledge became.
I do not like formulas that suggest camps can be predicted by distance and water only. Water gets you into the neighborhood. Camp logic narrows the neighborhood into real choices. One of the big mistakes that modern folks make is in trying to use our modern thinking to understand safe travel 170 years or more ago. In modern day cars, we travel in a single hour what would take a wagon train 6 days to traverse. We can easily drive 400 miles in a day and not have to worry about where potable water is, or heat, or safety. In that stretch of travel we will have passed many tens of places to drink, eat, and plan the next leg. We take much for granted and one of the most important aspects of being a History Detective is to look at the modern day landscape with the eyes of a pioneer from long ago. We have to understand the land, watering spots and where that long ago enemy might be likely to come upon us.
So let us continue our journey of discovering how to understand and figure out where people stopped along any migration route. Looking at it with the vision and knowledge from the early 1800s, a good overnight camp usually solves several problems at once. It offers dependable water. It offers enough feed or grazing nearby. It gives some degree of level ground and drainage. It allows fire or shelter. It keeps the party close enough to the route to resume movement without difficulty, but not so exposed that the stop becomes dangerous or miserable. Once you start thinking in combinations rather than single features, many likely stopping zones begin sorting themselves almost automatically.
This is one place where repeated use becomes especially powerful. A single emergency stop can occur almost anywhere. Repeated overnight use tends to settle onto the same practical ground over time. If a route was heavily traveled, and if a particular spring, bench, crossing approach, grove, or rise offered the right combination of water, grass, fuel, and campable ground, there is a strong chance people used it again and again. That repeated use is what gives many camp locations their long-term potential. The best sites were not always famous. They were sensible.
I think now is a good time to introduce you to a workable definition you will see throughout this series….what is a “bench”?
A bench is a relatively flat or gently sloping terrace cut into the side of a hill or valley above the surrounding terrain. Along creeks and rivers, a bench is often found several feet to several dozen feet above the normal water level. It provides a naturally level area that remains safely above most floods while still offering easy access to water below.
To a History Detective, a bench is much more than a landform. It represents a place where people were likely to stop because it solved several practical problems at once. A bench offered firm, dry ground for pitching tents, parking wagons, grazing livestock, cooking meals, repairing equipment, or spending the night. Unlike the floodplain below, it was less likely to become muddy or inundated after heavy rain. Unlike the ridge above, it usually required less effort to reach and often provided shelter from the wind.
Security also made benches attractive. A bench overlooking a creek allowed travelers to watch the surrounding country while maintaining a dependable water source nearby. From a slightly elevated position, a camp could observe approaching travelers, detect potential threats, and avoid being surprised by anyone following the watercourse. Military units, Texas Rangers, freighters, wagon trains, and even Native American camps frequently favored benches because they balanced access to water with tactical advantage.
Another reason benches became favored stopping places is that they naturally concentrate movement and that to a History Detective means a lot in terms of potential. Trails approaching a creek often climbed onto a bench before continuing toward a crossing or campsite. Repeated use over decades created locations where countless people paused, handled equipment, watered animals, prepared food, and interacted with one another. Every one of those activities increased the likelihood that small objects would be unintentionally left behind.
For the History Detective, a bench should immediately raise several questions. Is there a nearby spring? Does an old road approach the bench? Is there an easy descent to the water? Does the bench overlook a ford or ferry crossing? Is it protected from prevailing winds? Is there evidence of mature shade trees, charcoal, pottery, glass, or square nails? The more of those questions that answered “yes,” the greater the probability that the bench served as a stopping place rather than simply an attractive piece of terrain.
One of the most common mistakes made by beginning detectorists is searching the creek bank itself. Historically, people seldom camped on the lowest ground next to the water because it was damp, insect-infested, and vulnerable to flooding. They usually climbed onto the first suitable bench above the creek, where the ground was dry, level, and secure. That is where they built fires, prepared meals, repaired wagons, tended livestock, and lived their temporary lives. As a result, the bench often contains a far richer archaeological record than the water’s edge below.
In practical terms, when you stand on a bench overlooking a creek, you are standing where generations of people may have made the same decision: close enough to reach the water in minutes, yet high enough to remain safe, comfortable, and aware of everything happening around them. Those are exactly the kinds of decisions that leave artifacts behind and make benches one of the highest-probability landforms a History Detective can identify.
Another reason benches, steep banks along a river or small cliffs are great for us today is because travelers from native Americans to travelers could use those spots as cover for ambushing animals that came to drink water. We are ambush predators and a missed shot is why today we can find everything from points, spearheads, to war clubs in the water of a creek or river or in a bank where they embedded millennia ago.
It is true that a map can help you, but only if you ask the right questions. A creek crossing in the correct travel window deserves attention, but not every crossing produced a repeated camp position. Was there a workable bench above it? Was there grass nearby? Was the bank too steep for loaded wagons? Would the ground have flooded? Was there timber close enough for fuel but not so close that it trapped a party in darkness or made movement difficult at dawn? Did the route naturally widen or slow there? Did the land itself encourage lingering?
Those questions matter just as much at springs. A spring may be historically important and still leave little if the surrounding ground offered poor camping conditions. Another spring, less obvious on paper, may have become the true overnight stop because the nearby bench drained well, the grass was better, the timber sufficient, and the access easier. The History Detective is always trying to move from what looks important on a map to what would have felt practical on the ground. That last phrase is worth holding onto. What would this place have felt like at the end of the day?
That is not a romanticized question. It is an investigative one. Were the animals tired? Was the road behind difficult? Was the next water uncertain? Was the light fading? Was there enough room to spread out? Could a fire be built so as to provide heat and safety? Could stock be watched? Could the wagons get in and out without trouble? If the answer to most of those questions is yes, this candidate improves rapidly.
One of the common mistakes in camp prediction is confusing modern prettiness with historical usefulness. A place may be beautiful today and have been a poor camp then. Another may seem unremarkable now and have been exactly what weary travelers needed. The people we study were not selecting scenic overlooks for memory’s sake. They were solving evening problems in a working landscape. Whenever you lose sight of that, your camp logic begins moving toward imaginary results instead of evidence based realities.
This is also why weather and season can completely change the analysis. A place that makes an excellent dry-weather stop may become intolerable in prolonged rain. A creek that is dependable in spring may shrink badly in summer. Grass that stands high in one season may be poor in another. Timber that offers protection from wind in winter may feel less important in July. Some camps were used year-round. Others were strongly seasonal. The more specific you can be about the movement you are studying, the better your predictions become.
Military camps add another layer, though the basic principles still apply. Soldiers also needed water, fuel, workable ground, and manageable access. But they had additional concerns. Visibility, security, road control, proximity to objectives, room for units, availability of forage, and the ability to move quickly at dawn could all reshape the final choice. A military camp is not chosen under the same balance of concerns as a migrant family camp, though both still obey the landscape.
Civilian camps varied as well. A family with children might stop earlier if the ground was good and water dependable. A freighting outfit under pressure might push harder for a known stop with better grass and space for animals. A scouting party might accept rougher conditions in exchange for concealment. The principle does not change. Camp prediction improves when you stop asking where anyone could camp and start asking where this specific group would most likely have camped and understand the underlying reasons why.
That is why the strongest camp predictions usually come from multi-layered evidence. Start with the route and realistic daily travel distance. Narrow that into day-ending windows and inside those windows, rank places by access to water, grass, timber, shade, level ground, drainage, security, access, and repeated-use potential. Next, compare those candidates against anything the documentary record can add. Does a diary mention a creek? Or does a military report mention timber, a ridge, a ford, a spring, or a bad road? Does a map show a crossing, a station, a grove, or a settlement nearby? The terrain should confirm what the records suggest. When several different kinds of evidence begin agreeing, your confidence should rise quickly. As a result, what you are doing at that point is no longer merely guessing at camps. You are building a camp probability model.
That model does not have to be complicated to be useful. It simply has to be accurate and based on facts gathered from research. Some places are possible and even probable. Some locations are strong enough to deserve field time before others. This way of thinking matters because not every candidate location deserves equal effort. One of the advantages of becoming a History Detective is learning how to spend your time where the odds are strongest instead of treating every old-looking place as if it deserves the same attention.
It is also worth remembering that camps did not always remain camps. A good stopping place could later attract a blacksmith shop or a stage stop, followed by a homesite, a church gathering ground, a military reuse, or a small community. Repeated practical use often grows into something more permanent. That means some of the best stopping places become important not only because travelers paused there, but because later history presented itself on the same site.
That possibility should keep your eyes open. A predicted camp may also become a later homesite or a spring camp may evolve into a stage relay station. A bench above a crossing may draw repeated use across decades. Understanding that aspect is something that you gain through experience and time spent investigating in situ.
Once you begin applying all of this, the number of serious stopping site locations drops quickly. The route gives you the corridor pioneers used. Travel distance gives you the day-ending window. Campsite selection logic gives you the exact places inside that window where an overnight stop becomes likely. That is when the ground starts feeling less like a mystery and more like a Christmas package of goodies waiting to be opened. Once you can begin predicting overnight camps with confidence, the next question becomes even more practical.
What This Part Showed
Part Three narrowed likely stopping zones into true multi night camps. Water alone was not enough. A real camp needed enough of the right things in one place, dependable water, grazing, fuel, workable ground, drainage, shade, access, and some measure of security. The chapter also showed that camps were practical decisions, not scenic choices, and that repeated use usually settled on the same sensible ground.
